Driving a Car

Driving a car can be an excruciating experience for an individual with EMF Sensitivity. Cars have a myriad of electronic devices (e.g. a computer, a car diagnostic outlet or plug, car battery, car fuse box, an electronic dashboard). Additionally, many of these electrical components are located right at the driver's seat, or within a few feet of your body.

Most car manufacturers do not test for the signal strength that their equipment emits, and do not evaluate whether this interferes with a driver's attention and ability to concentrate. As cars are becoming equipped with more and more sophisticated electronic devices, this has an increasingly negative impact on individuals and their ability to operate their vehicles safely.

To find a car for an EMF sensitive individual, consider the following:

A) Buy an older, used car

Purchasing a used, older vehicle is recommended for EMF sensitive individuals. Older cars from the 60s, 70s, and even 80s and classic cars are usually well built. They have strong frames and tend to be well grounded. They also are not driven by electronic circuitry and will cause you to have far fewer problems with EMF sensitivity.

Of course, used cars have other problems. Be sure to carefully evaluate any used car to ensure that it runs smoothly and is reliable.

If you have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, you should also consider whether the car you are evaluating meets current pollution standards (cars built in 1975 or earlier do not have to pass smog tests in California, for example).

B) Reduce the EMFs in your existing car

One way to reduce the EMFs in your car is to remove the stereo system, the antenna, and the speakers in your car. This is usually your largest source of EMFs.

If you have a friend who is handy with electronics, ask them for help. Otherwise, ask your car mechanic if you are unable to do this yourself. We recommend purchasing and using a cheap portable stereo in your car instead of the built in stereo unit.

Also, if you have GPS, Cellular, or an Emergency phone network in your car, you will need to have these removed from your car. Some cars have these features integrated into your rearview mirror for example. You will want to remove your mirror in this case. You can buy an ordinary rearview mirror or side mirror from any Auto Shop for a few dollars.

Finally, deactivate the remote door lock system for your car. Remote keys are activated through radio frequency and are not recommended for EMF sensitive individuals. If you are purchasing a new car, you can usually request that the car not have a remote door lock system.

C) Purchasing a New Car

If you are purchasing a new car, carefully evaluate each car by bringing a "gaussmeter" with you to the dealership to measure the magnetic fields generated by the car. You should measure the magnetic fields at several places, including the fields generated by the car battery, and inside the car at the level of your head, your seat, and your feet.

Be careful not to purchase a car with built in GPS, satellite radio, weather/emergency radio, or cellular. Many manufacturers are building features such as satellite radio into all of their new cars. GMC has Delphi and OnStar built into their cars. Lexus has built in video cams. Even if the equipment is Disabled, you can still have a problem if the equipment is built into the car.

Pay careful attention to the car manufacturer during your purchase. Manufacturers make design choices that are frequently seen throughout their line of car models. Volkswagen frequently has their battery in the rear of the vehicle, which is helpful for EMF sensitive individuals. Mazda also has this design in some of its vehicles.

E) Public Transportation

Public transportation is frequently the best option for EMF Sensitive individuals.

There are WiFi networks in public transportation. However, because these networks and devices are more distant from you than in a car, they may be easier for you to tolerate. Of course, depending on your living and working arrangements, public transportation can be an inconvenient, if not impossible solution.
