![]() Which floor you live on can have a large effect on your wellbeing. Selecting the best floor to live on depends on your geographic location.
Basements Living in a basement has the benefit of sheltering you from many of the exterior electromagnetic fields. If you are below ground and there is a strong microwave source near your house, you should be sheltered from this field. On the other hand, if you live in a city that experiences frequent power surges and has strong power lines, you will probably feel better living on a higher floor. Past studies have shown that transformers affect the basement and first floor of a house most strongly. In addition to transformers, other equipment (namely, street cameras, police stations, street level power/traffic boxes, construction equipment, and private security such as the security found in hotel lobbies) can affect the power lines in your building, primarily the power in your basement and first floor of your building, even if these items are located down the street or several blocks away. As power line surges are usually transient and can be shielded, basements remain a good option for EMF sensitive individuals. Basements also benefit from the effect of grounding. As a result, even if objects become charged, this dissipates relatively quickly creating a more calm environment below ground.
The Ground Floor The first floor of a house usually benefits from the protection of other building structures around it, shielding it from excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields. The ground floor also benefits from grounding through the earth.
The Second Floor The second floor of a building is usually sufficiently far away from the power line fields of a house to dampen the strongest of power line fields. This is important if you live in a town that has large power surges or has many outdoor surveillance cameras. Many power lines enter a house through the first floor or basement floor. You need to look to see which floor the power line enters your building. Living on the second floor will usually place you above the strongest of these power line fields. Additionally, the magnetic fields of the earth, which are significant, decrease the further you are from the earth. If you are strongly affected by power line fields, you should consider living on the second floor or higher of a house.
The Top Floor of a Building
Many antenna and dishes are located on the roof tops of buildings. As a result, if you live in the top floor of an apartment building, you are likely to be more exposed to rooftop antenna and dishes as you are closer or in the line of sight of these fields. There are fewer other building structures to protect you the higher you are in a building. Finally, very strong, directed fields such as directed satellite or directed microwave/radar can penetrate through the very top floor of a house through the roof. If you have the choice, it is better not to live on the very top floor of the building, particularly a tall building, but to live on a lower floor. |
